Stop the cycle of compressor failures
Compressors should last roughly 12 to 15 years. If one is malfunctioning before its time, there’s a reason. Rooting out the cause and attempting to resolve it can save time and money.
90% of the time, compressors fail due to a problem within the system. If you don’t find and rectify the issue now, you’ll be dealing with the same problem again later.
Here are five places to troubleshoot before sending in a “bad” compressor for warranty or replacement. Safety first: disconnect the power supply before diving in!
Liquid from dirty coils
If the system’s coils are clogged with grease and grime, its evaporation cycle is hindered and can result in damage from condensation. Inspect and clean the coils to avoid a repeat occurrence.
Too little refrigerant due to a leak or undercharge can lead to overheating. A host of other problems can follow: winding shorts, bearing failures, reduced cooling or heating performance, and finally, compression failure.
Worn pulleys with loose fan belts
If the system’s belts or pulleys are worn and damaged, a compressor cannot work as intended. And working outside of its design parameters create a clear path to compression failure.
Bad contactors and controls
If a compressor’s electrical components are breaking down, locate the root cause before replacing any parts. Voltage fluctuations, high heat, debris, or pests can all lead to electrical failures and damage to the machine.
